From the files of Miss Markey's Kindergarten Class:

"If I was Dave for a Day"

LETTERMAN: Not so very long ago a lovely young woman was in our studio audience. She is a kindergarten teacher, and her name is Miss Markey, and she is from the Pointer Ridge Elementary School, and she is a kindergarten teacher there, and she had the little kids as a project put together a little essay, a little short collection of essays, the title of which all was, "If We Were Dave For A Day, a book for Mr. Letterman by Miss Markey's kindergarten class of Pointer Ridge Elementary school in Bowie, Maryland," is what it says here. Could that possibly be right, Bowie?

SHAFFER: I never heard of Bowie.

LETTERMAN: Well, that's what it says, Bowie, Maryland. So we're gonna read you just a few of these little essays. They're actually sort of sweet.

This one is from someone named Shannon, a little girl, and here's what she says if she were Dave for a day: "If I was Dave for a day, I would not listen to my mom." That's not a bad idea. I stopped listening to my mom a few years ago.

This one comes from a young kindergarten student by the name of Jim. "If I was Dave for a day, I would go hunting." Well, Jim, how do you think I got this hair piece? Oh, stop it, okay.

This is from a young kindergarten student named Justin. "If I was Dave for a day, I would go to the bank and get a million dollars."

By the way, I don't know what this is. (Dave is referring to a picture that Justin drew that looks like a phallic symbol). I don't know what that is. I have no idea. Just a little something from Justin. He's got a difficult life ahead of him, doesn't he? "Here, I bet Dave will enjoy this, Miss Markey. Here, Miss Markey. Send this to Dave."

Okay, this one is from Matthew right here. "If I was Dave for a day, I would hit myself in the head." Believe me, many a nights I've thought about doing that very thing.

Oh, I like this one. This is pretty good right here, and they drew these little pictures themselves and wrote the essays. "If I was Dave for a day, I would drive a car crazy." I would drive a car crazy. That's from Taylor in Miss Markey's class.

And this is from Bernard. Well, I think I've already done this today. "If I was Dave for a day, I would do a funny dance."

This is from Rodney Hughes, II. Okay, let's see what this says. "If I was Dave for a day, I would have both of my eyes on one side and nothing on the other side." That's interesting. Both of my eyes on one side. I'd look like a flounder. That would be my impression of a flounder.

Okay, here we have one from, yeah, okay, one from Ashley, cute little drawing here. "If I was Dave for a day, I would walk out the window." I'm Dave Letterman. Good-bye.

This one makes perfect sense to me. "If I was Dave for a day, I would have an octopus swimming on my head. "And again, the hair piece, smart alecky kids are making fun of my hair piece. That's what that is.

Okay, we have time for one more here. All right. Let's just do one more.

This is from Miss Markey's kindergarten class in Bowie, Maryland. Are you sure it's Bowie? That ain't what it says here.

"If I was Dave for a day, I would play with my balls." That's from Katey, Katey.

Okay, cute kids. That is from Miss Markey's kindergarten class, Pointer Ridge Elementary School, and ourthanks to Miss Markey and all of the kids. That was very, very cute.

Respectfully submitted, Kimberley
