Justin Maas
Hometown: New Hope, MN
Year in School: This is my Junior Year of School
Major (or Intended Major): Mass Communications with a Television Production Emphasis
Reason for choosing St. Cloud State University: The reason that I chose SCSU was for the TV department that the University had. I had learned about it from a Boss of mine in the Cities and was sold after that.
Involvement with UTVS: I have served as everything from a Camera person on the News Crew to the General Manager of the organization. Currently, I am the Line Producer for Husky Productions.
Favorite _SCSU Hockey Player__: Garret Roe, because although he is a little smaller than some of the guys on the ice, if there is a fight, he is the first one there….or he started it.
Dream Job: My dream job would be to work Produce Live sporting events around the Nation.

ST. CLOUD, Minn. – St. Cloud State University’s Husky Productions, for which mass communications students produce live telecasts of 20 Husky hockey games a year, skated off with a first place in the First Annual Global Media Awards for College Sports. Husky Productions won the "Best Live Game or Live Event" title in competition with entries from Bell State University, Baylor University, the Big East Conference and Indiana University of Pennsylvania.
The awards, offered for the first time this year, celebrate excellence across the entire spectrum of college sports video production, including work by colleges and universities, national and regional sports networks and technology innovators.
A panel of judges selected five Husky Productions entries for nomination in five of the competition’s 10 categories, in itself an honor as other nominees included ESPN, CBS Sports, Ball State University, Baylor University, Ohio State and the University of Miami (Fla). Husky Productions’ first-place entry was the Wisconsin vs. St. Cloud State game on Nov. 11, 2008.
In addition to the winning entry, Husky Productions was nominated three times in the "Special Feature" category and once in the "Outstanding Highlight Package" category. The nominations were for "SCSU Men’s Hockey History," Parts I and II of "The Fighting Sioux Nickname" and "SCSU Senior Night and Pregame Montage."
Professor Gregory Martin, Husky Productions executive producer, accepted the award at the Global Media Awards ceremony in Atlanta, Ga., on behalf of the students and Adjunct Professor Brian Stanley ’93, White Bear Lake, Minn., who was Interim executive producer during the 2008-09 season. Husky Productions producer is senior Justin Maas of New Hope, Minn., associate producer is senior Gwen Siewert of Lake City, Minn., and Derrick Silvestri ‘06, Sauk Rapids, Minn., is chief engineer.
Each of the 20 telecasts during the season are created by a crew of 28 students who put in long hours of planning, coverage and production time during the October to March hockey season. Play-by-play for the games is provided by Twin Cities television personality and alumnus Rob Hudson ’03, Minneapolis, Minn., with senior Jay Adkins, Rochester, Minn., providing the color commentary for the games shown on Charter Communication Cable Television.
Husky Productions is a student-led telecast of the men’s home hockey games at St. Cloud State. Most recently, the telecast placed first in the reporting category for the Society of Professional Journalists Award, second in the studio production category for a Broadcast Education Association Award, won a national Accolade Award in 2007, and received a nomination in the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Regional Emmy competition in 2007.
